Vacation, yay!

We are leaving for a shotgun type vacation to North Carolina early tomorrow morning for our first ever family vacation. Wish us luck! We are staying in Shawn's boss's cabin in Maggie Valley. It should be fun! I'll update when we get back. We should be returning Sunday late evening but I'll probably post on Monday!

Quick Update

Well I know I haven't posted in a week and a half, but this has to be quick because I have to load the kids up soon and go feed the horses.

Cadence is getting so big. She is starting to grunt when she wants to sit up...so I pull her up to sit or stand. She loves feeling like a big girl! She is still sleeping with me. I haven't even attempted to put her in her bassinet or her crib. So we go on sleeping together...its just EASIER lol!

We've backed off of potty training Alex. He was making a game out of it and becoming resistant so I just stopped the training immediatly. Every one in awhile he asks to go on the potty and I let him but he rarely goes on it. I am at a loss at what to do. I guess he's just not completely ready yet.

Cadence loves grabbing stuff...

Cadence loves grabbing ahold of stuff now! Especially her burp cloth and her little bunny bobo (which goes in her carseat with her everywhere..she likes to stuff its ears in her mouth). She is growing up so fast!!! It's crazy..

On another note Alex is doing SO well in his swim lessons. Yesterday he was able to swim in a float for 20 minutes all by himself without holding onto his instructor. He loves it. We only have 2 more days left, today and tomorrow. I'll have to look into getting a pass to the YMCA so we can continue to swim at least once a week, otherwise he'll be heartbroken!

Well I'll blog ya later, Cadence is fussing and wants picked up!

Unconditional love & sleeping by herself

Today's blog is mostly just a note that I LOVE LOVE LOVE the way my baby girl looks at me with just this loving, idolizing look. She looks at me with such unconditional love, and like she thinks I'm just the greatest thing since sliced bread. I love that. Unfortunately she will grow up and realize her momma isn't perfect, as is no one else. However, I'm enjoying it while it lasts!

Also I have GOT to get Cadence sleeping by herself. I'm sore all over from the way I sleep wrapped around her and then in the mornings she pacifys herself on my boobs for HOURS and I'm sort of tired of being a pacifier! I LOVE LOVE LOVE having her sleep with me, but at the same time I am not getting good, deep sleep doing this. So I want to try to get her in her bassinet by my bed. However, she screams when I lay her down. She always goes to sleep nursing around 9:30pm. So I'm going to try to nurse her to sleep in my bed and then transfer her to the bassinet. I have to do something so that I can sleep normal! I'll miss having her sleep with me but at the same time I think I'll be a happier person with more sleep. *SIGH*. She's growing up too fast!

4th of July

The Fourth of July was a blast, literally! We took the kids to the downtown "Street Fest". My (soon to be) stepson, 10, got to climb the rock wall. Both of my (soon to be) steps (7 and 10) loaded up on cotton candy and sno cones. Alex didn't like either the cotton candy OR the sno cones. I tried to get him to jump around in one of those blow up castles and he sat in the middle looking terrified. The lady felt so bad that she gave me my $2 back because he didn't jump OR have fun lol! Maybe next time. Alex LOVED the fireworks show. He wasn't scared of the lights or the booms and he just talked our ear off about it all the way home. Cadence jumped the first few booms but we were far enough away that she soon ignored it and just chewed on her hand the whole time. I was so worried I made Shawn keep us all a very far distance away from the fireworks because I was afraid of Cadence's hearing.

Cadence is starting to grab things and get very interested in them, so I'm going to go buy her some soft rattles and soft toys to grib and play with. She doesn't have enough control over her hands yet to not beat herself in the head with whatever she is holding, so I need some soft toys for her!

This morning we are going to take the kids to the park, so I better get off this blog and go cook some scrambled eggs and pancakes for breakfast! Hope everyone else had a safe time on the 4th!

Alex had his first swim lesson today

Alex had his first swim lesson today. He did SO good with the instructor. He listened intently, did everything that he asked him to do, and was just awesome for an entire 45 minutes! BUT...he had a 25 minute total meltdown after the lesson because he "wasn't done". Nothing I said to him would stop it, I had to carry him out kicking and screaming. He proceeded to throw the fit for 25 minutes in the locker room. It took both my mom AND myself to get him dressed. Then he was fine. Ugh! We go every day Monday thru Thursday for the next 2 weeks. I hope he doesn't have a meltdown EVERY time. I was glad to see him in the water and doing something though. I always feel guilty because we haven't done much since Cadence was born. Who, by the way, is doing good! She slept on my mom in the air conditioned lobby while I was outside watching Alex's lesson. Tomorrow I think I'm going to bring my OWN bathing suit and see if I can't get some swimming and exercise in while he's having his lesson!

We get the older kids on Thursday evening for the 4th of July weekend. We are going to go see fireworks...although I'm debating finding some sort of earmuffs for Cadence. But I figure if we are far enough away it won't be TOO loud, right? Well I'll blog ya later, gotta go!

She reached for me!

Just a quick note...Cadence reached for me today! My mom and I went out to lunch with the kids at Luigis and when I went to pick her up from my mom who was holding her, she reached for me! How cute is that?!? I haven't been able to wipe the smile off of my face since!

Pictures

Figured I'd share these photos taken of Cadence today. She's so freaking adorable! Of course, I am biased being momma!

We have a naked toddler and a pee on the potty!

Well Alex has been fun today. I got a pull up on him, then he went poo-poo so I think that is why he was begging for a diaper. So I took the pull up off and left him naked. Well lo and behold he just told me he had to pee, and we went and he got on the potty all by himself with his step stool and spongebob seat and he held his little wee-wee down and went pee pee! Then told me he was all done! I made a HUGE happy deal out of it. Hopefully we'll have some repeats today! I read to him on the potty and I think that relaxed him enough to go...so we'll try reading a book when he's got to go potty so he's not concentrating on going and saying "I can't!"

Urgent Care trip yesterday..potty training today

Yesterday afternoon I was holding Cadence on my lap on the back yard swing/hammock and Alex came running by with a water bucket (plastic) and swung it and it bopped her on the head. She screamed for 10 solid minutes and scared me to DEATH. Although there was only a small little bump on her head that was a little red, we loaded her up and took her to Urgent Care. They did a quick neurological exam to make sure that she was okay. She was fine, and the nurse and the doctor both must have thought I was neurotic. But it was so close to her soft spot I was scared to death of bleeding by the brain or something. Thank goodness she's okay though. It about gave me a heart attack!

Today we decided to start potty training Alex since he's been showing all the signs. He's been changing his baby doll's diaper, and having it sit on the toilet to "pee". He's wanted to pee on the toilet several times. He has been asking us to change his diaper BEFORE he pees or poos. AND he was also very interested in his take along sign and talk potty yesterday and sat on it naked for 2+ hours yesterday. So we dove into it today by putting him in underwear and training pants. Well that didn't last long. As soon as he sits on the toilet he starts screaming that "he can't". So I immediatly re-dress him. Then he had several meltdowns begging for a diaper. So I just put him in a pull-up because I don't want to push him too soon and make him think he HAS to potty on the toilet. I'm sort of disappointed, he was showing ALL the signs of being ready and then when we decide to try it, and put 100% effort into it, he freaks out. Ugh. It doesn't help that I don't know WHAT THE HECK I am doing in potty training a child. And I keep calling my mom and Shawn to ask them what to do. I hate second guessing myself.

Oh well, maybe we'll get rid of the bottle. That needed to happen at least 6 months ago. Everytime we've decided to get rid of the bottle something big happens that is stressful top him..either he gets sick (really sick), or I do and don't want to deal with it, or we move, and then Cadence was born. So maybe we should get rid of the bottles tonight and just do it cold turkey. Get them out of the house and tell him there are none left and basically if they aren't in the house I can't give in (my biggest fault!). Well I have to study for my Childhood Behavior Disorder exam for next week, so I'm going to cut this blog short!

Cadence is sick...

Cadence has been fighting the same thing that both Shawn and I had, as well as her big brother. Alex was really really sick, with an ear infection, eye infection, and croup. He's finally over it. I was really sick too. I thought Cadence had luckilly missed getting it, but now she is sick. The past three days she wakes up early morning (5-6am-ish) with horrible congestion. I put saline drops in her nose and then put her in her swing where she sleeps for a few more hours pretty comfortably because she is sitting up. Now she has a BAD cough. It's not croupy or anything thank goodness but its forced and dry and yucky sounding. Poor thing is sitting here hacking away while swinging, but she's sleeping! No fever, thank goodness. But I have a doctor's appointment for her today at 1:30pm. I have to take both kids as WELL as my 7 year old nephew, Dylan, because I'm helping watch him when my brother and his girlfriend are working.

Anyways, its a real bummer that Cadence is sick. I know what they will tell me....saline drops, prop her up to sleep, if the congestion gets really bad to sit in the shower with the hot water running and let it steam up. As it is I'm already running a cool mist humidifier by the bed at night. I hate it when my babies are sick!

On a brighter note, here are some cute pictures of her taken this morning with my NEW digital camera!

Pictures

I thought I'd share a picture of each of my sweethearts. I could totally laden down this post with hundreds of pictures (I'm addicted to taking pictures), but just picked a few this time around!
Here is Alexander at 3 months of age...

About my family

This is my first post in the blog of my children. It's late in coming, I really wish I had started one before the birth of my first child, nearly three years ago! It would be wonderful to be able to look back now at my posts and relive every precious moment. However, it never is too late to start, and I'm starting now, shortly after the birth of my second child.

First I will tell you a bit about myself. My name is Elizabeth, I'm 23, and am currently finishing my Bachelors degree at a private university. My major is Philosophy, my minor, Psychology. I'm supposed to graduate in December, nearly 5 1/2 years after beginning a four year college. However, that's not too bad after having two children in the midst of it all, is it really? As for my hobbies I love surfing the internet, reading books, but RIDING HORSES is my passion. I have been riding since I was 7 years old. I do a lot of equine rescue as well, and regularly have rescue horses coming in to be rehabbed, and retrained, at which point I adopt them out to loving homes. I currently own four horses (1 permanent, 3 rescues...3 Thoroughbreds and 1 Quarter Horse).

I am engaged to the love of my life. We will have been together for 4 years in December. His name is Shawn and he's a real estate appraiser. He's 28 years old and is divorced with two previous children, a boy that is almost 10 and a girl that is almost 7 (both have birthdays next month). We also have two children together. Alexander (Alex), born November 8th 2005, and Cadence, born April 3rd 2008. My pregnancy with Alex was fairly normal and uneventful (aside from the fact that I took pregnancy tests and they were all negative until I was 10 weeks pregnant, at which point the doctor did and exam and thought I was having twins, until she found out just how far along I was by ultrasound!), aside from lots of Braxton Hicks contractions from 7 months on. I was induced at 38 weeks because they said he was only 5lbs and not growing. I was induced at 8am and started pushing and was complete at 6pm. I pushed for an hour and 20 minutes, and at 7:20pm Alex was born, weighing 6lbs 15oz and 19.5" long. He was healthy aside from some severe jaundice on day 2, and we had to have him under bili lights for nearly 5 days! He has been completely healthy since, except for maybe a cold or two.

He was a fairly easy baby, I breastfed him and co-slept with him for 10 months. He went straight from the breast to whole milk and table food. He's been a very easy child, and for that I've been blessed. He makes it hard to make mistakes as a mother, and for that I am ever grateful. He's truly a very very special little boy. My pregnancy with Cadence was a completely different story. Everything was normal, I knew almost immediately that I was pregnant and actually had a positive pregnancy test a whole week before my missed period! However, at week 29 I started going into pre-term labor. I was hospitilized over 8 times, had over 60 shots of Breathane over the course of 29-30 weeks, as well as three different instances of having to stay and be put on magnesium sulfate. At one point I was even transferred by ambulance (at 31 weeks) to a high risk pre-term women & baby's hospital when the mag wouldn't stop the contractions. I was put on strict bed rest from February 14th and had to take Cardene every 6 hours around the clock.

At my 38 week appointment, I was given permission to go into labor anytime and taken off of bedrest. I was 3cm at that check-up. On the way home, I told my fiance to turn the car around and we rushed to the hospital with contractions. Got the hospital 3 hours after my doctor's appointment, and was already 5cm dialated and changing fast. It was a rush to get my blood work, I was given some Stadol while waiting for that to come back so I could have my epidural. Got my epidural at 4pm. Then my wonderful contractions stopped completely, and they had to give me Pitocin. I started pushing at 9:17pm and at 9:53pm, Cadence was born weighing exactly the same as her brother, 6lbs 15oz, and only 1/2" shorter at 19" long. She, too, had a slight case of jaundice so she was under bili lights for 36 hours, but was then allowed to come home with me.

Cadence is being breastfed just like her brother, and just like brother, she co-sleeps with us as well. She is a little bit more demanding than her brother was at this age (9 weeks), but she is a fairly easy baby, with no colic or issues. She's a primarily happy, smiley baby. Big brother Alex has settled into his role very well, and there doesn't seem to be any signs of jealousy at this point (just wait until she is crawling and walking and can take his toys away though, we'll see then!).

We live in a beautiful little starter home, with only 2 bedrooms (we actually sleep in the living room on our bed, so that Alex has his room and Cadence has a nursery that she doesn't even use (yet!). We own two dogs, a 9 year old rescued Boxer and a 15 week old Cocker Spaniel. We also have a cat.

Well I guess that's enough blabbing for my first blog! I'll post again soon, Cadence needs nursed!
